The Swan
The Girl on the TrainThe Swan is an establishment in Corly whose room under the eaves serves as a private meeting place for Megan Hipwell and Kamal Abdic. Their repeated visits make it more than a discreet backdrop: within its enclosed rooms, Megan tests the power she has over Kamal, while he eventually shares feelings he has not previously revealed to her.
Setting and Secret Meetings
Megan records meeting Kamal at The Swan after he has arranged a room for them. The secrecy is consequential: she says they must be careful not to get caught, because exposure could ruin his life and create a disaster for her, and she fears what Scott Hipwell might do. The room provides a place for their affair to continue beyond the ordinary boundaries of their lives, but it does not make the risks disappear.
The encounter also includes a conversation about Megan’s youth in Norwich. Kamal wants details about what happened to her there; Megan gives him an invented account rather than the truth, describing the fabrication as enjoyable and suspecting that Kamal lies as well. The Swan thus becomes a setting not only for physical intimacy but for deliberate concealment: even in private, what passes between them is not necessarily candid.
A Recurring Room
On Thursday, 7 March 2013, Megan returns to the room under the eaves with Kamal. The room is dark and close, and this time he remains with her, watching as they talk about where they would go. Megan imagines a house on the beach on the Costa de la Luz, then turns to Sicily and the Egadi islands, where they might open a beach bar and go fishing. These shared fantasies give the meeting the shape of an imagined life elsewhere, away from the constraints surrounding their relationship.
Kamal kisses Megan and calls her irresistible. She takes pleasure in the fact that he has returned despite previously saying their meetings should stop: to her, his return confirms that she was right that it would not be the last time. She savours the victory silently, experiencing his continued involvement as evidence of her power over him. The repeated room therefore marks a reversal between Kamal’s stated intention to end the affair and Megan’s conviction that she can draw him back.
Disclosure and Significance
Afterward, Kamal opens up in a way he has not before. He speaks about feeling empty, the family he left behind, and earlier relationships that left him feeling hollow. Megan recognizes a shared sense of brokenness and connects it with what she has taken from therapy: that the holes in a life may remain, and a person has to grow around them. She keeps this thought to herself. In the privacy of The Swan, the relationship shifts from Megan’s usual role as the one who talks to a moment in which Kamal discloses his own emotional history.
The Swan’s significance lies in this contrast between intimacy and secrecy. Megan and Kamal return to the same room, but recurrence does not resolve the danger or make their relationship straightforward. Instead, the setting gathers the affair’s competing elements: concealment, imagined escape, Megan’s satisfaction at having influence over Kamal, and the brief recognition of pain they seem to share.
